Stephanie, you do a nice job summarizing the main points of each article. More attention, however, should be given to including specific supporting information in your notes; you will need this information when you begin to write your essay this week. If you include the detailed information here, you will NOT have to waste time going back to the articles to find details to include in your essay. Chuck

ENLACE
Battle Of Marble Hill
Marble Hill was fighting for its freedom. In 1939, James J. Lyons, borough president of the Bronx, wanted the region and he wanted it badly. When the people of the area heard this they showed their dislike toward the Bronx. This did not stop Lyons from annexing Marble Hill but as soon as the citizens found out they started planning against Lyons, like making two associations. When Lyons found out they were against him he started to look for information to hold against them. Later on it became too much for Lyons so he gave up. Even though both sides had fought hard only one side had taken it home. During the battle of Marble Hill in 1939 and 1940, Lyons’s justification on taking over Marble Hill was strong, but on the other hand the people of Marble Hill had a stronger justification on not wanting to be part of the Bronx.
On March 9, 1939, as the New York times put it Lyons wants to take the yoke off of Marble Hill that Manhattan has had on it. Lyons had said that the people of Marble Hill are connected to the Bronx they share the same tradition, culture, language and community life. Also most the kids go to school, most of the people go to church and the public library in the Bronx. Isaacs, President of Manhattan, decided for the people of Marble Hill to decide for themselves but he said that he “doubts anyone from Marble would like to live in the Bronx”. So that is what they did, they shared their opinion on Lyons plans. (“'Sudeten' claimed by the Bronx fuehrer”, March 9,1939) March 10, as Lyons let out his not-so-much-of-a-secret of wanting to annex Marble Hill, the people of the area let out their thoughts to the press on the situation that was occurring. Some people just asked for stuff and said they didn’t really care as long as they got what they wanted. Some said they didn’t want to be part of the Bronx, one girl even said that if Marble Hill became part of the Bronx she would die. The rest of the people said that they were okay with being part of the Bronx, one man said, “Isn’t this the Bronx, already?”. (“Rectifying His History”,March 10, 1939) The Bronx is happy while Marble Hill is pinned down by it, Lyons annexed Marble Hill March 11, because ‘it was a nice day’(“Marble Hill coup planned by Lyons”, March 11, 1939. The people of Marble Hill did not have a chance to react but the next day, March 12, they woke up to judge and fight for what is theirs. “Residents say, they did not like the Bronx or its leader, and Lyons responded; well they did not like Lincoln for freeing the slaves”. Lyons said this meaning that Lincoln did what he thought was right, so, that is what he did.The people of Marble are also trying to finds way to go against Lyons. (“Marble Hill Area Annexed By Bronx”, March 12, 1939)
On March 21, the people of Marble Hill try harder to stay part of Manhattan instead of the Bronx. The people made two associations for them not to be a part of the Bronx. One association was called Marble Hill Association and the other Marble Hill Civic Association. Governor Lehman got a 1,000 name petition requesting the people of Marble Hill get their rights respected. Even as they try hard to not connect with the Bronx, some people just can’t help it. (“Marble Hill Mobilizes Against Bronx Anschluss”,March 21, 1939)
On May 20, things are getting harder for the people of Marble Hill to get through with the day without getting caught doing something that is bad. For example the property owners that got caught paying taxes to the Bronx instead of to Manhattan got in trouble because it was considered bad. Since Lyons was the one who caught them he threatened to report the property owners if they did not support the Bronx. Lyons had said that, ‘after the people of Marble Hill discover all the benefits of living in the Bronx they will love to live there’. Even though things were getting hard for the people of Marble hill it was getting harder for Lyons. (“Marble Hill faces New Lyons threats”, May 20, 1939)
When things with trying to get Marble Hill got tough Lyons got to thinking about the situation. On December 9, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to give up on fighting for Marble Hill. So, he took down the flag of the Bronx that he had planted on the day that he had annexed the area. Lyons also had planted the ‘Bronx tulip bulb’ on March 9, but when he went to go dig it up it wasn’t there. Apparently someone had already brought the ‘Bronx tulip bulb’ out of its hole, Lyons was really disappointed. (“Lyons Renounces Anschluss Plan”, December 9, 1939) January 10, 1940, Lyons gave up Marble Hill and gave to Manhattan, happy that he didn’t have to deal with Marble Hill or its people. The people of Marble Hill were glad that did not have to deal with Lyons anymore. (“Lyons Would Cede Wharf In Bronx”,January 10, 1940)
In the battle of Marble Hill both sides fought hard, but the residents fought harder. Lyons wanted to annex Marble Hill to the Bronx. The people, however, wanted to stay a part of Manhattan. Lyons wanted Marble Hill because he thought it would bring “the Bronx into the spotlight”. (“Boomer of the Bronx”,March 24, 1940) The people of Marble Hill wanted to stay apart of Manhattan because Manhattan was more comfortable for them and they did not like the Bronx and its leader. Even though Lyons wanted Marble Hill for their social status to change in a positive way, the people on the other hand did not want to be part of the Bronx for the people it self, they were comfortable being part of Manhattan and it was just easier for them. The battle was fair but the people that won it were the ones who deserved it.

(“'Sudeten' claimed by the Bronx fuehrer” , March 9,1939)
March 10, as Lyons let out his not-so-much-of-a-secret of wanting to annex Marble Hill, the people of the area let out their thoughts to the press on the situation that was occurring. (“Rectifying His History”, March 10, 1939)
The Bronx is happy while Marble Hill is pinned down by it, Lyons annexed Marble Hill March 11, because ‘it was a nice day’(“Marble Hill coup planned by Lyons”, March 11, 1939.
(“Marble Hill Mobilizes Against Bronx Anschluss”, March 21, 1939)
(“Lyons Would Cede Wharf In Bronx”, January 10, 1940)
(“Boomer of the Bronx”, March 24, 1940) The people of Marble Hill wanted to stay apart of Manhattan because Manhattan was more comfortable for them and they did not like the Bronx and its leader. Even though Lyons wanted Marble Hill for their social status to change in a positive way, the people on the other hand did not want to be part of the Bronx for the people it self, they were comfortable being part of Manhattan and it was just easier for them. The battle was fair but the people that won it were the ones who deserved it.
